How to Write Meta Title and Description for Google Visibility
There is no strict limit set by Google for meta titles and descriptions. However, for better visibility in Google SERPs, Google recommends keeping the meta title within 50–60 characters or 580 pixels, and the description within 150–160 characters or 920 pixels.
Meta Title
- The page title should be approximately 580 pixels or 60 characters long.
- Use the primary keyword in the title.
- Avoid keyword stuffing.
- Ensure all keywords used are main or closely related keywords.
- For technical SEO, the title should be no shorter than 200 pixels and no longer than 580 pixels.
- Avoid including the website name at the end of the title.
- Do not copy titles from ads or other websites.
- Make sure the title’s visible length is optimized for better visibility, and include the keyword within that limited space.
Meta Description
The meta description tag is not visible on your webpage itself. Instead, it appears on search engine results pages (SERPs), such as Google, right below your blog post’s title. The meta description is used to encourage users to click on your site, helping to improve the click-through rate (CTR). A good meta description can convince users to visit your page, whereas a poor one may cause them to scroll past it.
- The length of the meta description should be 160 characters or up to 920 pixels.
- For technical SEO, the meta description should be at least 350 pixels in length and no longer than 920 pixels.
- Use the main keywords in the meta description without keyword stuffing.
- Google does not index the keywords in the meta description. The meta description is only used to improve the click-through rate (CTR).
- Google states that there is no fixed limit for meta tags, but for better visibility, it is recommended to follow Google’s guidelines.
Tip: Use the main keyword in the page URL to achieve a higher ranking for that keyword.
SEO Title Length: It’s About Pixels, Not Characters
Google does not count meta titles and descriptions by characters. Google uses pixels for width to display in the search results. For SEO title and description, use pixels for best availability on the search results.
What Does That Mean?
- A “W” or capital letters takes up more space than an “i” or small letters.
- That’s why a title with 60 characters may be too long if it uses wide letters, while another with 70 narrow characters may still fit.
Example:
- This is a clean SEO title → fits well (narrow letters).
- WWW Wide Capital Words Look Huge → may get cut off.
Element | Pixel Limit (approx.) | Safe Character Range |
Meta Title | ~600 pixels | 50–60 characters |
Meta Description | ~920 pixels (desktop) | 150–160 characters |
Don’t use the duplicate title and meta description of the other platform. The best way to create unique titles and descriptions is by using primary keywords, proper pixels, and a slug. Mark some unique top-ranking meta titles and descriptions for comparison with your meta tags. Find the weaknesses in meta tags and improve them.
